The workshop

Everything we make

21 pieces in solid oak, European ash, kiaat, iroko and other hardwoods. Boards, mirrors and homeware are made and waiting. Furniture is built to your size.

21 pieces

Serving boardThree Africa shaped serving boards in oak, teak and mixed hardwood, in three sizes

Africa boards

Cut to the outline of the continent in 20mm solid European ash, oak or kiaat. It started as a workshop offcut experiment and turned into the piece people ask about first. Because every piece is cut from a single board, the grain traces a different path through every continent. Finished food safe, so no two are the same and none ever can be.

Serving boardFour blackwood baguette serving boards fanned out, each with a shaped handle

Baguette boards

Long and narrow, built to run down the middle of a table with a cut baguette and something to dip it in. Blackwood, so every board comes out a different colour, because every tree was.

Serving boardThree round serving boards, one plain and two with contrasting timber stripes

Round serving boards

Laminated from contrasting offcuts, so the stripes are a record of whatever came off the bench that week. No two the same. Three sizes, plain or striped, oiled for food.

HomewareTall tapered blackwood doorstop with a drilled finger hole

Doorstop

Tapered blackwood with a finger hole drilled through the top. Heavy enough to hold a door against a Cape southeaster, small enough that nobody minds looking at it.

HomewareSmall shallow round oak dish with strong grain figure

Soap dish

Turned from solid oak and shaped to drain, so the soap dries instead of sitting in a puddle. Oiled for water rather than food.

KitchenTwo thick ash chopping blocks with a contrasting dark timber stripe

Butchers block

Thick enough to take a knife properly without rocking or marking up in a week. A contrasting stripe runs through the middle. Ash or kiaat, two sizes, finished food safe.

KitchenTwo kiaat serving trays with a pale inlaid stripe and a recessed well

Inlaid serving trays

A well routed out by hand, with a pale inlay stripe set into the kiaat. Keys and coins by the door, or drinks carried through to the lounge.

KitchenLazy Susans

Lazy Susans

A turntable for the middle of a table, so the olive oil and the salt stop being passed around. Runs on a smooth bearing under a solid top, heavy enough that it stays put while it spins. Oak and ash, three sizes.

KitchenRectangular ash serving tray with a dark timber stripe and black steel handles

Serving tray with handles

Ash and blackwood with black steel handles bolted through. Carries a full set of glasses across a room without a hint of flex, which is the whole point of making it from solid timber.

HomewareSquare oak bowl with a round turned well and a contrasting red timber stripe

Square inset bowl

A round well turned into a square block, with a contrasting stripe running through the base. The shape is a bit of a trick: it reads as two pieces and it is one.

HomewareThree turned wooden bowls in oak and figured timber, in different depths

Turned bowls

Turned from solid, three depths that stack into each other. The figured ones come from boards that were too good to cut into anything straight.

MirrorMirror with a solid kiaat surround, the glass cut to the shape of Africa

Africa mirror

The continent cut clean through solid kiaat and backed with mirror glass, so the shape reads first and the reflection second. Hangs portrait or landscape. One piece, one only.

MirrorTwo round oak framed mirrors in different sizes

Round mirrors

Solid oak surrounds, turned true and oiled to a low sheen. Two diameters: hang the large one alone over a basin, or both as a pair up a stairwell.

TablesAsh and oak coffee table with solid timber legs

Coffee table, solid legs

Solid timber throughout, legs included, with no steel anywhere in it. The slab legs are thick enough to read as part of the top rather than something holding it up. Ash or oak, 865 x 525 x 380mm.

TablesOak coffee table on a black steel frame with a lower shelf

Coffee table, steel frame

A solid top sitting on a welded black steel frame, with a lower shelf for books and remotes. The timber does the warmth, the steel keeps the lines thin. Built to your length.

R2 200View
TablesNarrow kiaat console table with angled slab legs

Console table

Narrow enough for a hallway nobody wants to lose, heavy enough that it stays exactly where you put it. Angled slab legs in solid kiaat, which is the detail people notice on the way past.

DesksAsh desk on a black steel frame with two open shelves to one side

Desk with shelves

Solid ash top on a black steel frame, with two open shelves underneath. Built to the wall you actually have rather than a standard size that nearly fits.

TablesTwo round ash side tables on black hairpin legs, one tucked under the other

Nesting side tables

Round ash tops on black hairpin legs. Nest them under each other when the room is tidy, pull them apart when there are more people than surfaces.

WallDark kiaat coat rack with five forged iron hooks and brass screws

Coat rack, five hook

Dark kiaat with five hand forged hooks on brass screws. The cracks in the timber are left open and stabilised rather than filled, because they are the reason this board was worth keeping.

WallLong oak hook rail cut to the profile of Table Mountain with six steel hooks

Table Mountain hook rail

Table Mountain cut into the top edge, six hooks below it. The long one, for a hallway that takes a family's worth of coats and bags.

WallTwo tone key rack cut to the Table Mountain skyline with three brass hooks

Table Mountain key rack

The same skyline as the hook rail, cut short for the space beside a door. Two timbers laminated together, brass hooks. Keys land on it instead of the kitchen counter.
